How do I create a custom field or custom record where I can enforce Uniqueness

Hi,

I would like to create a custom field (or I can work with a custom record) but I'd like to enforce that the field contains a unique value for all records in NetSuite. How would I go about doing so? Why is there no option to enforce uniqueness when I create a custom field or record type?

Please advise.
