How to apply a Customer Deposit that was taken in a prior period but not applied to Invoice?

How to apply a client deposit that was taken in a prior period but not applied to invoice. The invoice is not showing up as available to have payment applied even though Invoice is showing a balance. Is there a way to apply the payment to the invoice?
