Can I have Item Versions without Issue Management Feature?

I'd like it if I could have fields on an item for the version and release numbers.

Is it possible to add this information so that I can still track the records of the items with old versions if the version has since been updated?

I see that it might be available behind the Issue Management feature but there's a lot of bells and whistles in that which I don't need.
