Why are required fields grayed out in some item fields?

Why are required fields grayed out in some item fields?


When I try to edit the form for an item field, some of the required fields are grayed out.

For example, the "UPC Code" on the Inventory Item form.

Why is this grayed out?

Also, if there are other required fields that are grayed out, why is that?
