Bypass any scripts or workflows on REST API update

Sometimes we just need to quickly update one field on a sales order but when it has to run additional scripts and workflows it can take up to 10 secs to complete. The field has no impact on any of the order data and is simply a status field.

Is there a way to bypass this extra processing?
