I have a demo environment, and can not tell if this is failing because of the environment, or something wrong with my coding.  I have a simple trigger on a business object for before insert to set a field called "kmAuthToken".  I am then setting the output of the creation of this object to application variables.   I can see the "createdBy" come through, but "kmAuthToken" always comes back as null.  I can go to the data tab of the business object and see that data was entered, but the "kmAuthToken" field is blank on all records.  I have also tried
