Section & Content Layouts. Any guides?

Firstly, I apologise if this post is considered too basic. I can't seem to find any helpful anywhere.

I know CEC has some section layouts to use. I've tried to create my own but there isn't a single guide I can follow which will simple tell me how to make a section with 5 columns. I can create a new one, but no clue what to put in it etc.

You might be wondering why someone of my lack of experience is asking here. Our company has given me this platform and let me run with it, but my knowledge is limited.
