Can A Project have multiple departments

Summary: I have assigned a department to my project. The departments in my organisation have gone through a restructure. Can I assign more than 1 department to the existing project (that means include the new department which supersedes the one I have assigned to the project initially). The existing department assigned to the project still needs to be linked to the project because the project has many open transactions and they need to be closed out (possibly would take <> 6 months to a year to close off all the purchase orders and invoices).
