Is there a way to prevent the update of a specific property if the node is not being newly added?

We've had an issue where users are updating the Start Date property on preexisting nodes, causing issues in our GL. Is there a way to prevent the update of a property based on if the node was preexisting (in other words, not newly added as part of the request)?
