Planning Project Flag

When I select the "Planning Project" flag in the Manage Financial Project Settings, I see that the Planning Page - Project Plan Type lists out more options, but what exactly does this flag mean, what is the difference in functionality used between a project that is Set as Planning Project vs. not? Thank you!
