How to use Alternate Designator field in Item Structure?

Any further explanation on the field "Alternate Designator" in Item Structure will be appreciated.

Content (required):

According to help content, Alternate Designator field links the parent and the child Bill of Material and helps to identify the alternate Bill of Material.

I am not sure if I fully comprehend that.

1) Based on the literal meaning, it seems to be a field to indicate another option.

2) Based on the help content, it seems to be a field that we MUST use to link higher level BOM to lower level in a multi-level BOM.

Any further explanation will be appreciated.
