Is REST API can stop lots use after expiry date or retest date is reached

Actual Question: Is there any automation (e.g. REST API) when lots go past Expiry or Retest date to change their material status to stop any use? And if so, would this be a global change or confined at Org level?

Is REST API can update material status of a lot?

Idea: Can we stop use of an expired lot just like the way 'Warning' sign comes on top of screen when lot expires?
