RDBPROD encrypt/decrypt a field in table

Hi,

I am searching for information on encrypting one field in a table. I came across NOTE: 363325.1. I found it alittle difficult to follow because the example is written in BLISS, which I am not familiar with.  I have a web application written in java and want to know if this capability is possible to use in my case?
