IBM zS: The perils of being back level

Recently I came across an SR where the customer was running Oracle on z/OS version 9.2 - which is no longer in Premier support - and ran into bug 3788247. This is a timing issue in that if the z/OS image has been up for 249 days or more, the database or clients can get divide by zero / abend S0C9, rendering the database inoperable. It's a fairly trivial fix, but it isn't available for 9.2, and can no longer be produced for 9.2 as it's out of Premier Support.

This then leads to a forced IPL, with the associated system-wide outage, and a scheduled IPL every 240 or so days. Since this is generally unacceptable in these high uptime days, we can see how failing to keep current can lead to significant impact. We strongly recommend all customers move to the highest supported level in order to minimize such issues.

Howdy, Stranger!
