RDBPROD: AIJ backup before Online Full backup

I've understood it's best to do an AIJ backup before a DB backup, but is it necessary?

For example, if it could occur that an AIJ backup failed (for example due to space limitations) , could an automated procedure continue to do a full backup that might put that on another disk, then the AIJ could be backed up afterwards - or would it be best if the AIJ backup fails, to then terminate the backup procedure?
