Unable to get instances to register to local listener

I'm currently having an issue where 5 out of the 6 instances installed on my server are not registering.  I have gone over the documentation for setting up listener and troubleshooting.   Below are the articles I have gone to so far for assistance in understanding how to get the listner to 1) automatically pick up running instances or 2) connect to instances listed in the listener file.

How do I get my instance out of an UNKNOWN status?  I can't find any articles on this subject.
