6540 hdd (disk) replacement Completion Status: Virtual disk state is not valid

We recently replaced 2 HDD's on two different ST6540 arrays.
We've failed the drives and the new disks appeared unassigned. We used the below command line to start the copy-back:
service -d <arrayname> -c replace -t <drive_needing_replacement> -q <drive_to_be_used_for_the_replacement>

On one ST6540 we received Completion Status: Success.
On the other ST6540: Completion Status: Virtual disk state is not valid

Any ideas?
