Are ASLs required?

Hello!!
I`'m creating Global Blanket, and I do not force to use an Approved Supplier in Master Item (Purchasing tab).

So, I have a question about ASLs and Sourcing Rules: Do I need to create ASLs?

I was reading ID 1463861.1 and I understood that if I set up "MRP: Default Sourcing Assignment" = YES system automatically use the last blanket created for the item I request... so I don't need ASLs, It just works setting up Sourcing Rules and their Assignments to items.
