Software RAID or Hardware RAID

We have a J4200 attached to SUN Xfire 4450 host.  We are reinstalling the redhat OS on this machine and have the opportunity to switch to using software RAID. We have had a fairly colourful support history with the J4200 it seems that software RAID would cause less issues. We are now using our disks for long term archive so performance would no longer be an issue.

Does anyone concur that software RAID generally causes less issues?

I've also lodged the same question as a SR and will post the result here.
