Functionality of 'Manufacturer' field in ASL form

Hi,
Can someone please let me know the functionality of Manufacturer filed under ASL form? The field is getting enabled only if we select Distributor from the business need LoV. And I read in Oracle help document that we must the distributor with a manufacturer and we must define a manufacturer before defining the distributors. Please let me know how do I define distributors and manufacturers. Thank you.
