Replacing 6140 batteries nearing expiration

I have just been shipped replacement batteries for a 6140 which raised an ASR since they are near expiration. The batteries still show their status as ok, with 40 days until expiration, and the blue 'safe to remove' leds are currently off. The documented procedure via the CAM service advisor assumes the 'safe to remove' led is on, and does not seem to account for the requirement to replace batteries which have not actually failed.
What is the correct procedure to carry out this replacement? Can I just disable write-caching on the volumes and change the batteries while the 'safe to remove' led is off, and re-enable write caching once replacement is complete and the new batteries are happy?

Howdy, Stranger!
