Is there a configuration to make the asset serial number not required when registering a new Asset ?

We have all the asset numbers, but the Asset Serial Number is yet being inventirized, we need to register the Assets already. Can the asset serial number be NOT REQUIRED, and how so?.

If this cannot be done, can the asset serial number be updatable?
