How do you add a field to a shared region via OAF?

I wanted to add a Message Styled Text field to a shared region.  So, I extended the VO, did the substitution, personalized the page and the field showed up.   However, on the other page that uses the shared reason, the field is not available.  When I click on personalize page, the field is not in the list.  When I try Create Item to create the field as I did on the first page, I get an error saying the field already exists.  OK, but then where is it?
