Updating promise dates and auto-approval process

All,

Oracle standard feature allows auto-approval after a promise date has been updated within the number of days setup in change order tolerances setup, but this process does auto-approval only if there was a promise date and the new promise date is within the tolerance we setup. If the initial promise date is null, this process still follows the re-approval route which actually makes sense.

I want to know if there is any way around this, how to setup the system to auto-approve even if the promise date is changing from NULL to some date next week.
