Multiple Select field and Advanced PDF template

I have a multi select field on the sales order record that points to a custom record. I am trying to get values from that custom record fields but get the error below when trying to iterate the selected records using <#list>

  For "#list" list source: Expected a sequence or collection, but this has evaluated to a hash+string (wrapper: com.netledger.templates.model.StringModel):

Is the away to access the field within the multiselect list items?
