Customise Advanced PDF Statement Template for Invoice Groups

The Standard Statement PDF/HTML form includes a list of the invoices that are in the invoice group. You can customize the template to only show one line for the entire invoice group.
Is it possible to similarly customise an Advanced PDF Statement Template?
The problem is that the underlying Invoices are shown without a Date field, and this is causing problems with my calculations on the Advanced PDF Template.
Looking online, it seems to be very hard to check for NULL values in a Date Field.
<#if line.datecol?has_content> is always false regardless of if there is a date in the field or not.
