Why is the General Ledger report showing detailed transactions not starting at zero on current year?

Client is asking for a detailed general ledger (or other) report that shows a starting balance of zero based on the From: date. The screen shot below shows the proper detail, but it's confusing that it doesn't show running totals starting with zero:
