"For Sale" item linked on journal entry

I am trying to be able to reference our 'for sale' items on a journal upload so that a payroll allocation journal entry can be allocated to not only revenue type but items under the revenue type. We track our time outside of NetSuite (software development hours) and do a .csv import with department, class, etc. but we want to be able to do an IS by Item and have the costs associated with the item come in. I've tried creating a custom field linked to the source list of 'Item' and source from 'Name' but when I try to
