Email Templates

I'm trying to create a new email template for sales orders.   My subject has the following  Sales Order # ${transaction.tranid}     When the communication is sent it is actually showing ${transaction.tranid}  and not replacing it with the actual data.   Any suggestions

Not for sure how to delete this post. I have it working now.
