Contact Drop-down Listing "Attached" Contacts

Question

We have a custom transaction header field called Primary Contact that is used on opportunities.  This is a List/Record field that is setup with the following source filtering.

This restricts the contact selection to the list of contacts at the company the opportunity is with.  What we would like though is to restrict the selection to the list of contacts that appear on the Relationships > Contacts page of the company, which includes contacts from other companies that have been "attached" to the company.  Is this possible?

What is interesting is that two Contact saved searches that are very similar behave differently.

Saved Search 1

Criteria: Company = XYZ

Results: only returns the list of contacts at company XYZ

Saved Search 2
Criteria: Company : Name/ID = XYZ

Results: returns the list of contacts at company XYZ and a contact from company ABC that was attached to company XYZ

We need the filtering for the drop-down to work like saved search #2.

Upon checking internally with my colleague who is knowledgeable in this topic. Based on your setup, the data that can be fetched with the source filtering on a custom field are only contacts that are directly associated to the customer.

Unlike when doing it using Saved Search, it can show the expected results on the criteria you provided for Saved Search 2. At the moment it is the expected behavior for Sourcing and Filtering for custom fields.

You can file a support ticket to have it further checked and for support to file an enhancement if it is indeed the expected behavior.
