handle nlapiRequestURL response that is a PDF file

I'm making a call to a 3rd party which returns a PDF file.  My goal is to attach the PDF file to a record, so that seems easy.  However, based on my learning, nlapiRequestURL only accepts text and JSON as content-types.  What is the best way to consume the response?
