Remove line item on line validation

Is it possible to remove a line item when using line validation? I currently have a script that when the user clicks add for an item it checks to see if the item is in stock, if it isnt it currently alerts them that its not in stock and that they need to remove it from the order. I want to go one further and actually remove the item from the order automatically. This is in the UI when creating cash sales. Thanks in advance.
