Custom PDF Layout for Custom Record Type

I think the title says it all...I have created a custom record type to hold contract information, and want to be able to customise a PDF layout for it, so we can print contracts for customers.

Is this possible? I couldn't find anything except some reference to scripting XML output, or using mail merge to accomplish it, which is not ideal as we'll generally print them one at a time, not lots at once.

Any ideas?
