nlapiCreateFile and Rich Text Fields (pdf)

Does anyone know a way to grab rich text from a rich text field and use nlapiCreateFile and/or nlapiXMLtoPDF to create a pdf and attach to email? All the ways I have tried to do it show the html code. The only way I have found to keep the formatting and not see the code is to create an .htm file and attach that. Not an optimal solution for us. I really need a PDF file.
