Activity Alert

I am trying to create a workflow to create an activity alert. Basically what it does is looks at the total count of tasks / calls scheduled for a particular day. I then set a threshold - say 20.

When the user goes to schedule their 21st call / tasks, a warning window would pop up let them know they are above the threshold.

Can anyone over any insight on how to do this? I am stumbling with writing the formula.
