Hide Custom Field

Question -

I have a custom field on my item record. let's call it field X
That custom field X is used as the basis for a search that is also pinned on the item record. This field is field Y

I have tried to then restrict access to field X for a sales role while still showing the field Y but when I restrict access to field X Field Y returns an error value.

Any thoughts?
