Customising Emails?

I am trying to customise the Sales Order Confirmation we send to our customers. I am using the tag <NLITEMLIST> however when the email appears in the customer in-box all the columns are out of line. I have tried changing the font to Courier and I have tried aligning everything right but nothing seems to help at all. Is there any way to make the values line up so that the email looks professional?
