Make a field mandatory only on creation of new record

We currently have the email field on an entity record as a mandatory field.  However, I'd  like to change it so it's only mandatory on initial record creation.  Is there an easy way to do this?  If it requires a script of some sort, could someone point me in the right direction?  Thank you in advance.
