Mail Merge Activities Not recorded in Customer File

We are doing some email merges rather than creating and executing campaigns in certain circumstances.   I was suprised to find there is NO RECORD of these mail merge sends in the customer history file. 

Am I looking in the wrong place or are they just not recorded?
