When do you use the convert button on lead?

When will you use the CONVERT button on the standard Lead form to convert a LEAD to a prospects?

The standard lead form does not come with a SALE tab for creating Quotes, Transactions, Opportunities.

Is it a good practice to use a Customer Form on a Lead to have the SALE tab for creating Quotes, Transactions, Opportunities?
