is declareCurrentAttribute obsolete?

Is it still necessary to include the tag

<%=declareCurrentAttribute('item','custitemx')%>

at the begining of your code before being able to reference attribute customitemx?

I know that this used to be required but I have a feeling that this is no longer required can anyone confirm this.
