formula fields causing search results to break

i'm trying to show some formula fields in a list of Jobs - but when i add any of them to the results, the search gives "An unexpected error has occurred."

the formulae are using custom fields e.g.
round(100*{custentity_earned_value}/{custentity_planned_value},0)

is this a known limitation/bug?
