Formula-based Default Values for a 'Stored' Field

I've seen several posts on this subject but I haven't found a definative answer yet.

Is there any method (without scripting) to use a formula to produce a Default Value in a Custom Field, yet have that Custom Field be Stored with the record?

[Explanation: I have created a custom transaction field.  When creating a new transaction record I would like the custom transaction field to display a defualt value based on a formula.  Once the transaction record is saved, I would like the cutom transaction field value saved with the transaction record (either unchanged from its original default value, or as changed by the user).  Like many other posts have noted, I can get the custom transaction field to properly display the formula default value if the "Store Value" box is unchecked, but no default value is displayed at all if the "Store
