Customer Entity Field

We have a custom field that was created before i was hired.  It was created to hold a lot of numbers.  I am wanting to edit this field so you can only add a 4 digit number instead of 5 or 6 or 7 or more.  I only want 4 digits to be entered and  nothing more.  How can i do this?
