Item record: Quantity on Hand

Is it possible to get an item custom field to show the total Quantity on Hand or Quantity Available - not by location?

We need to show a number that applies across all locations. We would preferably like to hide the specific location quantities, so that our reps just know that the item is available, without knowing the specific of in which location it is stocked.

When I try to add the {quantityonhand} or similar fields, I get an error.
