How to add part number (item id) to a sales order using Advanced PDF/HTML templates

I've added ${item.itemid} to a column in our Advanced HTML/PDF Sales Order template.  When rendered, it shows nothing for that column.  Why?  I added it the same way that I've added other columns that are working properly.
