Restrict the types of characters used in a NetSuite field (like item Name/Number)

Item Name/Number ... aka {ItemID}

Can we make it where it has to only contain letters and/or numbers or "-" and nothing else?  Spaces and punctuation and "special characters" causes problems when exporting to 3rd party channels.  We've cleaned it up, but would like to stop users from being able to use unapproved characters going forward.
