New to Bar Coding

We have been using Netsuite for a while now and are now interested in setting up all of our inventory and service items with bar codes to use for scanning purposes. We have already enabled the Bar Coding and Item Label feature, but haven't put anything into the UPS code field for our items. What is the best way to go about doing this?
