Internal Id # as Item #

Is anybody using the Internal ID of an Item Record as the Item Name/Number? We are thinking of changing our part numbering system to a non intelligent, numbers only, system. Since Netsuite already generates an Internal ID we might as well use that number. Does anyone see a problem with this idea?
