Item with core charge

I need advice setting up an item.

It is a part that carries a core charge that gets refunded when the core is returned.

So there is a physical item (that is drop shipped 100% of the time so it never hits our physical inventory) and the core charge is charged as a seperate line item then refunded later when the core is returned. The return can be anywhere from a few days to a couple of months later.

What is the best way to set this up to cause the least amount of headaches down the line?
